1⃣ Why did you decide to support the Basin Food Summit and Expo?

It’s not a hard decision. It is in the best interest of anyone, especially retailers, in our area to support this event as it contributes so much towards building connections and creating a space to discuss the opportunities and challenges of growing, producing and selling food in our region.

2⃣ What do you love most about this event?

The opportunity to connect. Most of the time we are all busy with our ‘day-to-day’ and don’t often step back from that to get together and learn, share, and explore what makes producing, distributing and selling food in our region unique. This event is part celebration of the quality and diversity of our local food system and part exploration into the opportunities and challenges we all face.

3⃣ Why is an event like this important for our region?

When we think about food resiliency, we often think of distribution, warehousing, growing seasons, climate resiliency, but really the key to food resiliency is building connections. To allow people to share their wins and their challenges so we can learn from one another, so we can collaborate. We may all be doing different things, but it’s all towards the same common goal, which is to build a strong and resilient food system in the Basin.

🔈🌱 This year, we’re thrilled Kendall Ballentine from @marketingforfarmers who is passionate about giving farmers and food businesses the tools they need to grow their business online. She’ll be leading “Exploring Sales Channels for Growth” on Thursday, October 24 from 11am-12pm at the Arena Main Stage.

🔈🌱 Binny Gill, owner of Farming Karma Fruit co, runs an agri-tourism facility with their family on their orchard in Kelowna, BC. The facility serves as a hub for their production facility, where Farming Karma Apple Soda is created, and includes an RV park, cherry orchard, tasting room, media building, and more. She’ll be leading a presentation on Friday, October 25 from 9:15-10am at the Arena Main Stage.

🔈🌱 What if the future of farmland lay in creative solutions, partnerships, and a bold reimagining of our relationship with the land? Heather Pritchard of the Foodlands Cooperative has spent nearly three decades shaping BC’s food systems. As a founding member of FarmFolk CityFolk and chair of Slow Food Canada, Heather has been at the forefront of cooperative and sustainable farmland initiatives.
